João Roberto Ripper was born in 1953 in Rio de Janeiro. He trained in journalism and worked as a photo reporter for several notable newspapers and agencies. Over his long career, he has dedicated himself to documentary photography, especially focused on issues of human rights, social justice and the lives of marginalized communities across Brazil. Ripper founded the NGO Imagens da Terra , and later the project “Imagens do Povo,” an agency-school that offers photographic training and visual expression opportunities to residents of under-represented communities, including those in favelas. His work often portrays the dignity, everyday life, and beauty in populations frequently subjected to stigma and neglect. He also leads workshops, publishes books of photography, and collaborates in exhibitions that showcase resistance, identity, and cultural memory. In recent years, he has been involved in preserving his photographic archive, recognizing its importance for culture and society.
