Piracicaba International Humor Exhibition

Piracicaba International Humor Exhibition

One of the oldest initiatives in the segment in the world, for almost 50 years, the Piracicaba International Humor Exhibition continues to fulfill its role in the universe of graphic arts, nurturing a space for reflection, discussion and innovation on art and humor.
Year after year, the Salon reaffirms Piracicaba as a kind of “World Capital” of graphic humor, at the same time revealing new talents and valuing historical authors and works.
The Salão emerged in 1974, during the military dictatorship, as a courageous initiative (some would say “offensive”) by a group of Piracicaban artists, journalists and intellectuals who gathered in a bar called Café do Bule.
In the first sketch, the idea was to insert a graphic humor show inside the Piracicaba Contemporary Art Salon. For this, these Piracicabans left, in the summer of 1972, towards the newspaper “O Pasquim”, in Rio de Janeiro, to attract supporters and compose the collection of the exhibition. Even with the support of the cartoonist Jaguar, who authorized the use of his originals in the exhibition, the exhibition did not take place, as Editora Abril, unfortunately, did not release the works.
From there it was decided to create the Piracicaba Humor Exhibition!
