Kirsty Elson is a driftwood artist based in Cornwall, UK. She has been collecting washed-up treasures from local beaches for over twenty years. She studied illustration and printmaking at the Cambridge School of Art. Before becoming a full-time artist, she worked various jobs such as petrol station attendant and child portrait photographer. Around 2004, she began creating handmade cards with little driftwood scenes. These early pieces gradually developed into intricate three-dimensional sculptures. While she started with cottages, boats, and lighthouses, her focus has shifted to quirky animals and birds. Her materials include driftwood, scrap metal, old brush bristles, and other found objects. The shape and color of each piece of wood guide her design. Sometimes the sculptures come together instantly; sometimes they wait for months in her studio. She sells her work through her online shop and social media. Her studio is a treasure trove of whimsical characters and rusty bits. Each sculpture is unique and playful. She finds joy in the unexpected possibilities of everyday discarded items. Her work reflects humor, originality, and love for nature’s forgotten remnants.
