Marcelo Chamorro is an Ecuadorian cartoonist and architect renowned for his incisive political caricatures. Born on January 23, 1960, in San Gabriel, Ecuador, he pursued his primary education at Escuela 28 de Septiembre in Ibarra. He then attended the Instituto Superior de Artes Plásticas "Daniel Reyes" in San Antonio de Ibarra for his secondary studies. Chamorro later earned a degree in architecture from the Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo at the Universidad Central del Ecuador. While trained as an architect, Chamorro gained prominence as a graphic journalist and cartoonist. His work has been featured in Ecuadorian publications such as Diario La Hora and the magazine Vanguardia . Chamorro's cartoons are noted for their sharp commentary on political and social issues, often critiquing figures like former President Rafael Correa. His art emphasizes the importance of historical memory and the dangers of authoritarianism. Throughout his career, Chamorro has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, including events in Bulgaria, Cuba, and Spain. His accolades include awards from the I. Municipio de Quito's National Painting Salon in the mid-1980s.
