Jorge Swinnen is an Argentine architect and watercolorist, born in 1964 in Mercedes, Buenos Aires. He graduated as an architect from the University of Buenos Aires in 1990, and worked professionally in architecture for many years. While always interested in art, he experimented with many techniques in his youth—painting, figure drawing, various mediums—but in recent years he has focused exclusively on watercolor. His architectural training shows in his compositions: careful perspective, light, structure, and atmospheric effects. Swinnen is also involved in teaching, giving presence-workshops on watercolor in his region. He has won recognition in international watercolor festivals, including an award at the Venice International Watercolor Festival. Some of his most noted works are aerial or panoramic views of urban landscapes, often of Mercedes, with attention to both detail and mood. He sees watercolor as a demanding and almost unforgiving medium—once you apply water to paper, corrections are difficult, so the process involves planning, sensitivity to color transitions, control over water, and letting the medium do some of its own work. His works have been exhibited in Argentina and abroad, like in Mexico. Swinnen combines his architectural vision—structure, space, light—with the fluidity of watercolor, achieving pieces that are both precise and emotive.
