Víctor Vélez or better known as Chubasco, was born on February 6, 1972 in Mexico City. He is a professional cartoonist and visual artist. From the early age of 16 he began to publish in the newspaper "El Universal", one of the main newspapers in Mexico. Throughout his career, he has also collaborated in important media such as “El Economista”, “La Jornada” and “Reforma”. Likewise, he has worked with magazines such as "Siempre", "Expansión", "Life & Style", "Chilango", "Quo", "Esquire" and "Gente" and has been a contributor to the French magazine "Courrier Journal", a subsidiary of the newspaper “Le Monde” and has been a cartoonist for “Carton Club” and “Vj Movements Cartonista”. Chubasco has also ventured into the process of organizing, coordinating, and curating exhibitions by famous Mexican cartoonists such as Abel Quezada, Manuel Ahumada, and Ernesto “el Chango” Cabral. In addition, he has been a member of the jury in important events such as the Havana Biennial in April 2015. Among the national and international awards Chubasco has received are: • First place in Graphic Humor to Gallarate (Italy, 2016). • Honorable Mention in the XVIII Mercosur International Cartoon Contest – Argentina, 2013). • Honorable mention in "World Press Cartoon" - Sintra, Portugal - 2013. • Third place in the special prize for comics "José́ Saramago" at the XV Porto Cartoon Word Festival - Porto, Portugal - 2013. • First place in Personal Cartoon "Joaquín Sabina". • Honorable Mention in Humorous Cartoon for "Glotón". • Honorable Mention for “Resistant and resistant”. • "Tomy" Award, at the XVIII Biennial of Graphic Humor - San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba - 2013. • Honorable Mention at the First International Festival of Cartoon Petroleum Products Distributor Company – Iran - 2012. • Honorable Mention in the 2011 Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Award from the United Nations Organization. • Honorable Mention in the Political Cartoon Award - New York - 2011. • Participation in the XVII Journalism Biennial - San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba -2011. • Participation in Gallarete Humor Marco Biassonni and winner of the Grand Prix - Le Estelle, Italy - 2009. • Honorable Mention at the XI Biennial of Cartoonists - Beijing, China - 2008. • Second place in editorial cartoon in "World Press Cartoon" - Sintra, Portugal – 2007. • National Journalism Award for "Paginas" - Mexico - 1997. • Juvenile Interpretation Award – Mexico – 1995. As a result of his prolific cartoonist career, he has participated in the creation of the book "Corrupción Mexicana" from the publishing house "Grijalbo" and has illustrated books such as "Cortando Rábanos" (Co-published with the Secretary of Culture of San Luis Potosí, Ediciones del Lirio and the Museo of Popular Art), "The circus" from the publishing house "Artes de México", "Possessed animals in the land of the Hñähñu" from the publishing house "Artes de México", "Jacinto Pérez, hunter of images of the Mexican Revolution" from the publishing house “Artes de México”, “El regalo de Elías” from the publishing house “Artes de México”, and “Cartmoons” with the trajectory of his work from the publishing house “Cartoon Ark”, Greece. Among the exhibitions he has carried out, there is "Marital Status: Humorist" at the Cultural Center of Contemporary Mexico (May - 2016), "The attack of the green men" (Caricature by Abel Quezada) and "CartonClub" at the Museo De Mexico City (August-September 2015), "Individual exhibition at the Museum of Humor" in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba (April 2015), "Retrospective" (Metro Pino Suárez; 400 stickers. Beganic Galerie), "Víctor Vélez ” at the Regia Gallery in Monterrey and “Chubasco” at the Cervantes Forum in the Federal District. He has also collaborated on projects with important companies such as "Coca-Cola" and taught caricature and watercolor workshops in different cities in Colombia such as Bogotá, Medellín and Cali and in Mexico in the cities of Oaxaca, Zacatecas and Saltillo. He is a very versatile visual artist, as he masters traditional techniques such as acrylic, oil, watercolor, India ink and graphite, as well as digital techniques.
