Gilda Picabea is the winner of the Argentine award for visual arts 2023

The artist Gilda Picabea was the winner of the fifth edition of the Argentine Prize for Visual Arts 2023 from the Osde Foundation, endowed with one million pesos, for her oil on canvas “Close Encounter” and with the award ceremony the exhibition was officially inaugurated with the finalist works.

There were 1,400 artists registered for the visual arts contest, of which the selection jury - made up of Clarisa Appendino, Carolina Cuervo and Nicolás Martella - chose 57 works, including drawings, paintings, photographs, objects, videos, collages, sculptures and installations, that make up the exhibition inaugurated last night.

Then, an awards jury, made up of Alejandra Mizrahi, Malena Souto Arena and Sebastián Vidal Mackinson, awarded a total of six prizes and four honorable mentions, where Picabea was the winner of the First Acquisition Prize, the highest award.

The winning work is a large oil painting on canvas, titled “Close Encounter,” painted by the artist born in Buenos Aires in 1974, named after the character played by Rita Hayworth in a renowned film. The exploration of color - the “chromatic searches” - is one of the central themes in the career of this artist and teacher, who studied at the Prilidiano Pueyrredón School of Fine Arts and who admires Alfredo Hlito and Raúl Russo, among others.

During the ceremony, the artist Tamara Goldenberg was also awarded the National 18/35 Acquisition Award, worth 450,000 pesos, for her photograph “Paseo I.”

On the other hand, the “Region Award”, which has four categories and is endowed with 150,000 pesos in each one, went to the artist from Corrientes Andrés Romero von Zeschau, the Cordovan Samantha Ferro, the La Plata artist Valentín Asprella Lozano and the Neuquén twins Malen and Suyai Otaño.

The four “Region Awards” were implemented this year for the first time, designed to reach the entire Argentine territory, and from there the winning artists emerged.

The jury also decided to award honorable mentions to Ramiro Pasch (from San Nicolás de los Arroyos), Julieta Barderi (San Fernando, province of Buenos Aires); Aurora Castillo (CABA) and Juan Federico Rubi (La Pampa).

The exhibition of the fifth edition of the Argentine Prize for Visual Arts 2023 will remain open to the public until December 9, from Monday to Saturday from 12 to 8 p.m., at the Art Space of the Osde Foundation, Arroyo 807 (esquina Esmeralda), from the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Retiro, with free entry.
