Panama: Art, Transit, and the Crossroads of Cultures

Panama: Art, Transit, and the Crossroads of Cultures

Panama, a bridge between oceans and continents, has developed an art marked by transit and cultural hybridization. Pre-Columbian culture left behind pieces of goldwork and ceramics of remarkable sophistication. During the colonial period, Panama was a key commercial center, and its art reflected the fusion of European, African, and Indigenous influences. In the 20th century, Roberto Lewis and Teresa Icaza were pioneers of pictorial modernism. The National School of Visual Arts has been fundamental. Contemporary artists such as Brooke Alfaro and Gustavo Araújo address identity, migration, and globalization through diverse artistic languages. The Museum of Contemporary Art of Panama and the Panama Art Biennial have energized the scene. Panamanian art is a melting pot of cultures in constant transformation.
