“We are on the side of Palestine”: District school students in Colombia created a mural in solidarity with Gaza
In the town of Engativá, students from the La Palestina district school painted a mural in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Students from the La Palestina Educational Institution, in northwest Bogotá, expressed solidarity with the plight of the people of Gaza and painted a mural as a symbol of peace. The event was attended by the Palestinian ambassador, Raouf Almalki, and officials from the ICBF (Colombian Family Welfare Institute).
The proposal arose after a mural painting workshop sponsored by the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare. According to Naya Gutiérrez, the director of Childhood, Adolescence, and Youth at the institution, “the common goal is to protect the rights of children and adolescents, and of course, how could we not join the call of the Palestinian people to continue raising awareness about situations of violence,” the official stated.
The school also provided opportunities for reflection among students regarding the genocide to which the Palestinian people are subjected. For the school's principal, José Ángel Bernal, the creation of the mural "was a participatory initiative where the young people contributed ideas and created the mural," he stated.
The mural, located in a heavily trafficked area of Engativá, at the intersection of 80th Street and 73rd Street A, is a source of pride for the school's students. For Sebastián Delgado, a student at the school, the intention was to send a message to the community at large, "because we are on the side of Gaza, they are Palestine, and we are Palestine, something that unites us and makes us more human," he emphasized.
The event was attended by the Palestinian ambassador, Raouf Almalki, who expressed emotion at the welcome given by the young people. "This is yet another example of the solidarity of the Colombian people, showing that the entire world is aware of what is happening in Palestine, condemning the genocide and supporting the Palestinian people's struggle for their rights," concluded Ambassador Almalki.
