Architect will be the first Black woman to design the São Paulo Biennial

Rio de Janeiro native Gisele de Paula will design a project alongside architect Tiago Guimarães for one of the largest contemporary art exhibitions in Latin America.

The 36th São Paulo Biennial will feature architect Gisele de Paula as the first Black woman to design the exhibition. The Rio native, in partnership with architect Tiago Guimarães, will present a project that seeks to highlight historically silenced voices in the art world. The curator, in turn, is curated by curator and art writer Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung.

With free admission, the Biennial will take place from September 6, 2025, to January 11, 2026, at the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion in Ibirapuera Park, and will bring together approximately 120 visual artists.

The new edition, organized by the São Paulo Biennial Foundation, promises to expand perceptions and presence in the artistic field, with reflections on humanity, nature, and listening.
Throughout her career, Gisele is known for evoking the knowledge of Indigenous peoples, quilombolas, and riverside communities. She also celebrates the power of Black women, in a trajectory marked by the redefinition of ways of occupying and proposing territories.
