The exhibition offers a broad exploration of Latin American visual culture from the early 20th century to the present.
It shows how the continent's artists have reflected, challenged, and redefined social, political, and cultural realities through art.
The exhibition, co-curated by Issa Al Shirawi, Curator and Director of International Exhibitions at Qatar Museums, and María Amalia García, Senior Curator at Malba, is organized into six thematic sections.
They cover artistic responses to urbanization, identity, memory, and resistance.
It offers a nuanced perspective on the shared yet diverse experiences that define the region's visual language.
Visitors to LATINOAMERICANO will be able to appreciate iconic works:
Self-Portrait with Monkey and Parrot (1942) by Frida Kahlo.
Dance in Tehuantepec (1928) by Diego Rivera.
The Widower (1968) by Fernando Botero.
Omi Obini (1943) by Wifredo Lam.
As well as other masterpieces.
These works are presented alongside lesser-known contemporary gems and voices, including pieces recently acquired by Malba and exhibited for the first time, and important works from Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art and the future Art Mill Museum.
Chile occupies a prominent place within LATINOAMERICANO.
With the participation of renowned figures who have shaped the history of modern and contemporary art in the country.
Iconic works such as Lotty Rosenfeld's A Mile of Crosses on the Pavement and Cecilia Vicuña's Disappeared Quipú intertwine with politically charged and experimental pieces by artists such as Guillermo Deisler, Eugenio Dittborn, Voluspa Jarpa, and Alfredo Jaar.
Also included are early creations by Roberto Matta, one of the most influential figures in surrealism worldwide.
This selection offers a powerful look at Chilean visual languages and their ability to reflect, denounce, and transform sociopolitical realities through art.
The exhibition, which extends to the outdoor spaces of the National Museum of Qatar, includes the large-scale installation Sculpture of Dreams (2023) by Marta Minujín.
An extravagant, inflatable structure presented for the first time in Times Square, New York.
The piece provides visitors with a sensorial experience that reflects the joyful and imaginative nature of Latin American art. Featuring celebrated names and emerging voices
LATINOAMERICANO invites audiences in Qatar and the region to discover a rich and complex artistic legacy that has been historically influential but underrepresented in the global narrative.
The exhibition not only bridges geographical and cultural gaps but also deepens mutual understanding and artistic appreciation between Latin America and the Arab world.
LATINOAMERICANO is presented as part of the Spring-Summer 2025 Season of Qatar Creates, a platform dedicated to amplifying the voices of Qatar's creative industries and promoting cultural activities within the country.
A comprehensive public program will accompany the exhibition throughout its duration, including lectures, guided tours, workshops, and community activities.
These initiatives are designed to foster dialogue, exchange, and participation to ensure that the LATINOAMERICANO exhibition is accessible and engaging for a broad and diverse audience.
