Bogotá is preparing to host one of the most representative exhibitions of 20th and 21st-century Colombian and Latin American art. The country's premier auction house will present 98 works to be auctioned next Thursday, May 29th at 8:00 p.m., in an event that will bring together 80 prominent national and regional artists.
The exhibition will be open to the public, with free admission, at the auction house's headquarters located at Calle 70 # 10A – 59. Visitors may visit Monday through Friday, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Saturdays until 5:00 p.m. It will be a unique opportunity to appreciate works by great masters such as Fernando Botero, Alejandro Obregón, Juan Antonio Roda, Beatriz González, Emma Reyes, David Manzur, Débora Arango, Carlos Jacanamijoy, Miler Lagos, Maripaz Jaramillo, Luis Caballero, Santiago Cárdenas, Delcy Morelos, Édgar Negret, Lucas Ospina, Ómar Rayo, among others.
One of the main attractions of this edition will be the presence of two exceptional works by Fernando Botero: "Alberto" (1951), a highly expressive oil painting that the master painted at the age of 19, and the Unexecuted Mural Project, a piece conceived in New York in 1961.
The auction will include works in diverse genres such as landscape, still life, portraiture, and photography. The landscape section will feature an iconic cloudscape by Gonzalo Ariza, a large-format jungle painting by Pedro Ruiz, and a rural sunset by Marco Tobón Mejía. In still lifes, red fruits by Andrés de Santa María, floral vases by Obregón and Freda Sargent, and fish by Ignacio Gómez Jaramillo will stand out.
Unique sculptures will also be presented, such as Puente (1977) by Édgar Negret and a rusty iron work by Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar, as well as geometric and abstract pieces by Enrique Grau and Carlos Rojas. The human figure and the body will be explored in the works of Luis Caballero, Carlos Granada, Norman Mejía, and Pedro Alcántara.
The second generation of modernists will be represented by three distinct moments in David Manzur's career, with drawings, abstract pieces, and mature works. In addition, contemporary works by Miler Lagos, Lucas Ospina, and Alejandro Sánchez will be auctioned.
The contribution of women to Colombian art will have a special space, with works by Marlene Hoffmann, Emma Reyes, Beatriz González, María Teresa Hincapié, Cecilia Porras, Freda Sargent, among others. Additionally, works by the so-called "primitives," such as María Villa, Noé León, and Leonora Alarcón, will be included.
Photography will also be featured, with works by Fernell Franco and performance recordings by María Teresa Hincapié. Among the most anticipated gems will be a large-format painting by Luis Roldán and an autograph notebook by Antonio Caro, dated 1982.
According to Charlotte Pieri, the house's general director, "this will be an auction that will allow visitors to discover pieces that have never been on the market, many of them in private hands for decades. We want the public to come closer, explore, and be amazed by the richness of Colombian and Latin American art."
