The owner of the Malba Museum acquired the Daros Latinamérica Collection, adding 1,233 works by 117 artists from the region to his holdings. These new pieces will be displayed after the museum's expansion.
The Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires (Malba) announced that its founder, Eduardo F. Costantini, acquired the Daros Latinamérica Collection, comprised of 1,233 works by 117 artists from the region, primarily produced between the 1950s and 2010s. With this acquisition, Malba's and Eduardo Costantini's collection of modern and contemporary Latin American art will nearly double in size and rank among the most important and extensive in the world, comprising approximately 3,000 works.
This decision is part of a strategic expansion for Malba, which will include the expansion of its building beneath the plaza adjacent to the museum, with the aim of adding more exhibition space for its constantly growing collection and temporary exhibitions. The new construction will double the current museum's surface area, increasing it to approximately 8,000 square meters.
In the words of Eduardo F. Costantini: “Adding major contemporary pieces to the existing masterpieces in the collection and being able to project the museum's leap in scale as it approaches its 25th anniversary is a dream come true.”
The Daros Latinamerica Collection was established in 2000 by Ruth Schmidheiny and her then-husband, the Swiss businessman and philanthropist Stephan Schmidheiny. Its arrival at Malba also marks the return of highly significant Latin American works to the region, after being part of the collection based in Zurich, Switzerland.
