Paraná will be home to one of the largest art museums in the world

Paraná will be the stage for one of the largest cultural projects in Latin America. The partnership between the State Government and the Centre Pompidou, one of the most important museums of modern and contemporary art in the world, was made official this week in Paris. The agreement provides for the installation of the Centre Pompidou Paraná in Foz do Iguaçu, marking the creation of the first satellite unit of the French museum in the Americas.

The announcement was made by Governor Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior and the president of the Pompidou, Laurent Le Bon, and represents a milestone in the international strategy of the institution, which already has units in cities such as Malaga (Spain), Brussels (Belgium), Shanghai (China), AlUla (Saudi Arabia) and, soon, Seoul (South Korea).

With an estimated investment of R$200 million, the project will be built on a plot of land next to the Foz do Iguaçu International Airport. The bidding process is expected to be launched in 2025, with construction scheduled to begin in 2026 and the inauguration scheduled for 2027. - First published in GMC Online » Paraná will house one of the largest art museums in the world; discover the chosen city.

The project has had technical support from Pompidou since 2022, in an initial five-year cooperation agreement. The teams are working together to develop the museum's curatorial, architectural and educational concept.

The architecture will be designed by renowned Paraguayan Solano Benítez, winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale (2016). The project emphasizes the use of sustainable and local materials, such as ceramic bricks, and proposes a construction that is integrated into the natural territory of Foz do Iguaçu, close to the Falls – one of the greatest natural heritage sites on the planet.

According to the state secretary of Culture, Luciana Casagrande Pereira, the choice of architect reflects the commitment to sustainability and respect for the local environment. “We could not import zinc from Russia for a project next to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
