More than 30 works by Omar Rayo on display at the Cartagena Museum of Modern Art
Omar Rayo Reyes, Colombian painter, printmaker, and sculptor, is being honored at the Cartagena Museum of Modern Art with a major exhibition.
During the 4th edition of the Cartagena Art Circuit, the Cartagena Museum of Modern Art will host a unique exhibition paying tribute to the work of the master Omar Rayo.
Omar Rayo was a Colombian visual artist, primarily known for his graphic and pictorial work. His style was characterized by the use of geometric and abstract forms, often with a focus on black and white, and color contrasts. His work evokes the purity of line and form, creating an effect of movement and three-dimensionality.
Rayo was a tireless experimenter with techniques and materials, and his work ranged from prints and watercolors to sculptures. He also founded the Rayo Museum in Roldanillo, his hometown, a space dedicated to the dissemination of Latin American art and the preservation of his own legacy. His work reflects geometry and abstraction as a universal language.
The Rayo works on display, which span his artistic period from 1970 to 2008, are on loan from the Rayo Museum in Roldanillo (Valle del Cauca).
"We are delighted to welcome Omar Rayo to Cartagena and to be able to showcase his life and work as a tribute to his outstanding work as one of the fathers of geometric art in Colombia and Latin America," said Jorge Mario Zumaqué, director of the Cartagena Art Circuit, who was responsible for the coordination between the Cartagena Museum of Modern Art, the Rayo Museum, the Mercuria gallery, and other relevant players in Cartagena's cultural scene.
The opening ceremony was held on August 8th and was attended by Águeda Pizarro Oniçiu, director of the Rayo Museum Foundation and the maestro's widow, who is the curator of this exhibition.
"The exhibition is called Transcendental Geometry and seeks to push the boundaries of each of its proposals through poetic and verbal resources... forms, simultaneously geometric and real, lead us to a cosmos that lives beyond the limits of our perception," explained curator Pizarro Oniçiu.
The exhibition will be open to the public until September 7th and will be a unique opportunity for Cartagena residents and visitors to immerse themselves in the best of Colombian modern art.
