“The Eye of the Night” Exhibition at the MON

A tribute to Niemeyer, the “The Eye of the Night” exhibition will be on display at the MON until Sunday
The exhibition brings together a unique constellation of colors and delicacy in blown glass, developed by the French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, in homage to the architect Oscar Niemeyer. There are 12 sculptures suspended in the Eye, representing the signs of the zodiac.

“The Eye of the Night” will be on display at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum (MON) until April 27 (Sunday). The exhibition brings together a unique constellation of colors and delicacy in blown glass, developed by the French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, in homage to the architect Oscar Niemeyer.

Curated by Marc Pottier, the exhibition presents 12 sculptures suspended in the Eye, representing the signs of the zodiac. The whole becomes a celestial dance, challenging the public to look up and be enchanted by a unique planetarium, in harmony with a sea of blue-toned bricks, composed of approximately 6,000 pieces in the center of the space.
In the Araucária Space, visitors are surprised by installations that dialogue with the architecture of the Museum. The work “Oráculo” (2024) directly contrasts with the structure of the Olho, since the delicacy of the glass stands out amidst the concrete. In front, there are six sculptures, entitled “Parede de Pedras Preciosas” (2024), forming a set of colored bricks that connect with the architectural dimension proposed by Niemeyer.

Jean-Michel Othoniel (France, 1964) is a contemporary artist. He has worked in several areas of the visual arts, such as drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, writing and performance. Since 1993, he has used glass as his main material of expression, becoming one of his trademarks. In recent years, he has presented his works at the Petit Palais museum and garden in Paris; at the Seoul Museum of Art and at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York.
