Cervantino 2025 Unmissable Events: 17 Days of Art, Culture, and Surprises in Guanajuato
The state of Guanajuato, in north-central Mexico, is gearing up for the 2025 International Cervantino Festival, the most important cultural and artistic gathering in the country and one of the most renowned in Latin America. With the United Kingdom and Veracruz as guest countries, the 53rd edition will bring together 3,458 artists, of which 2,938 are Mexican and 520 come from 31 countries. What events are not to be missed?

MUSIC AT CERVANTINO 2025

A wide range of theater, dance, music, film, and visual arts events is expected from October 10 to 26. According to the Ministry of Culture, for the first time in Mexico, the Kaoru Watanabe and Bloodlines Interwoven collective will perform a jazz concert at the Teatro Juárez on October 12 at 9:00 p.m.

"The group was conceived as a dialogue between musicians and artists from diverse diasporas, generating a profound exchange of the elements that constitute culture: language, food, religions, customs, and philosophies," the government agency explains.

Another notable event is the Sun Ra Arkestra concert, which will take place on the Esplanade of the Alhóndiga de Granaditas on October 25 at 8:00 p.m.

“Jazz was not born on Earth, but rather is a stellar fire transformed into sound, according to Sun Ra. In this performance, the rhythms will meet synthesizers to honor the legacy this American musician left behind, and now it will materialize on the festival stage with the Sun Ra Arkestra,” the Cervantino announced on its website.

Also noteworthy is the jazz concert “Bagatelles de John Zorn,” by London-based composer, arranger, and trumpeter Sam Eastmond, as part of the UK activities. Composed of 300 short pieces, performed by a contemporary chamber ensemble, the concert has an open, collaborative, and expressive approach. It will be held on October 11 at 8:00 p.m., also at the Alhóndiga de Granaditas.

For this musician, “the compositions burst into his daily life like a flock of green parrots in the West London sky; an unexpected flash that transforms the landscape.”

In addition to the above, one of the unprecedented acts in the history of the "festival of the spirit" will be the electronic music session "Circle of Live," directed by Swedish artist Sebastián Mullaert, presented in collaboration with MUTEK Mexico on October 12. Since its first presentation in 2018, the performances in this session have been solo or ensemble.

Looking out for Richard Strauss's opera "Elektra," with the National Opera Company of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), under the direction of conductor Stefan Lano and stage direction by Mauricio García Lozano and set design by Jorge Ballina, the event also features the opera "Elektra," performed by the National Opera Company of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL).
THEATER MUST-SEE

Regarding this offering, the participation of Spanish director and playwright Angélica Liddell, a leading figure in international contemporary theater, stands out with her production of "Terebrante" by the Atra Bilis Teatro company. This piece intersects with the world of flamenco and challenges the traditional conventions of the musical genre by eliminating singing, dancing, and clapping, focusing solely on the cause of suffering. The work will be presented in two unique performances on October 11 and 12.

According to the Ministry of Culture, one of the most anticipated Mexican premieres of this edition is the performance "NeoArctic," created by the Hotel Pro Forma company from Denmark and Latvia. According to the institution, the performance is situated in the context of the Anthropocene, marked by the profound alteration of ecosystems characterized by human activity and poses an aesthetic and sensorial reflection on the effects of climate change.
