Latin American art arrives in Paris with the sound of stickers
Mexican Adela Calderón, Guatemalan Mario López, and Colombian María del Rosario Marmolejo participate in the exhibition "Noise of Stickers," curated by Adriana Silva of Arte al Paso, which opens this Friday at the Sorbonne University in Paris. But before that, they were with Jordi Batallé at RFI's El invitado (The Guest).
Adela Calderón was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, in 1957. She first studied painting in her hometown, then in Ciudad Juárez, her second home, where she learned painting techniques in oil, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic.
In San Miguel Allende, Guanajuato, at the Nigromante cultural center, she studied contemporary painting. She has participated in countless group exhibitions in different cities in her native country and many others abroad, including Canada, Japan, India (Bombay, New Delhi), the United States (El Paso, Texas, Los Angeles, Phoenix), Spain (Madrid, Malaga), and Italy (Milan, Florence, Venice). She has also held countless solo exhibitions in cities such as Guadalajara, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Chihuahua, El Paso, Texas, and Los Angeles. She has received honorable mentions in two biennials held in Ciudad Juárez and awards at various art exhibitions.
María del Rosario Marmolejo, MaríaRo, is a Tropical Expressionist visual artist born in Cali, Colombia, in the heart of South America. She is dedicated to capturing the essence of nature, exploring its vibrant culture and deep spirituality. Her work is fueled by the intensity of color, form, and movement, seeking to convey the beauty, vitality, and mystery that inhabit this exuberant world while simultaneously expressing messages that burden the world, such as the devastation of the Amazon, migration, and the destruction of biodiversity and environmental balance.
She is an industrial economist, but she has the soul of an artist, and for 14 years she has freely focused her time on her artistic project. After several exhibitions in Colombia, in 2022 she was invited to exhibit at the 1st Biennial of Contemporary Art in Cali, Colombia. In 2023 she ventured internationally with her participation in the 5th Biennial of Contemporary Art in Salerno, Italy. Since then, she has participated in exhibitions in Venice, Italy; Mexico, Paraguay, Miami; now in Paris, and in October she will be present in South Korea.
Mario López was born in Finca Oná, El Quetzal, San Marcos, Guatemala. His childhood among the coffee plantations has been one of the greatest gifts life has ever given him: growing up among sunrises announced by the birds, contemplating the dazzling sunset that danced to the children's songs. He began working in the coffee plantation as a child, the morning dew soaking his pants and rubber boots as he followed the voice of the foreman, carrying his machete, his coffee basket, and the satchel that held the tortillas made by his mother. His paths were paths of dirt, bushes, and ants. In winter, they turned into mud swamps, and those paths were his first canvases, for he drew on them with his machete, and his first works were traced with tree branches.
