What did Antonio De Loayza say about 'Urban Skin'?
Antonio De Loayza, born in Lima in 1993, is a Peruvian sculptor based in New York, as can be seen on his social media.
The artist stated that “one of my main interests is how identity and memory are constructed in a fragmented and chaotic space like the city.” “My works reflect the search for identity in a diverse and complex territory like Peru. I draw inspiration from the landscape, popular culture, religious beliefs, and mythologies as a starting point to draw my own imagery that corresponds to community and ancestral memory within the landscape I inhabit, conveying the connection between the earthly and spiritual worlds, seeking harmony between human and non-human beings and the territory,” he expressed.
He also emphasized: “Using different media, I seek to represent the transformation and diversity of the territory, incorporating iconographic and mythological symbols. I promote the preservation of cultural identity and the inclusion of ancestral heritage in the contemporary world, generating reflection on the need to find ourselves once again in unity as a civilization with ourselves and with what sustains us.”
