"Brazil of fright and dream: an overview of the work of Rivane Neuenschwander" brings together new works and emblematic works by the artist
Through her more than 30-year career, visual artist Rivane Neuenschwander invites us—through lines, colors, words, and actions—to escape the clutches of apathy, renew our perspective on reality, and be enchanted by building new possible worlds. Rooted in our experience (individual and collective), fright and dream are our power to fight against the barbarities of everyday life.
It is with this transformative spark that the exhibition "Brazil of fright and dream: an overview of the work of Rivane Neuenschwander" arrives at Itaú Cultural (IC). Curated by Fabiana Moraes, the exhibition runs from August 14th to November 2nd and presents a panoramic tour of the artist's work, bringing together emblematic works from her career—such as Ash Wednesday/Epilogue (2006), Behind the Door (2007), and Repente (2016/2025)—with works never before seen in Brazil and others produced especially for the exhibition.
Born in Belo Horizonte, Rivane Neuenschwander has had a distinguished international career marked by a keen perception of everyday life, political engagement, and transdisciplinarity. The formation of partnerships and collective construction are integral to her working method and the poetic richness of her work. One example is the installation Dream.lab, never before seen in Brazil, in which collectivity is fundamental to the work: the drawings featured in the work are the result of workshops with children. Discussing issues such as the meaning of dreams in human history, their ephemerality, their relationship with wakefulness, and their power to imagine other possible futures, the activities invite young people to remember their dreams and connect their imagination with their creative potential.
Whether through contact with our feelings, through the diverse experiences of Carnival, or through denunciations of the military dictatorship, racism, and the environmental crisis, Brazil of Fear and Dreams is an exhibition that connects artist and audience. It's a call for engagement.
It's "wow!" after "wow!"
