Peruvian painter, sculptor, and cultural manager Gerardo Chávez, one of his country's most renowned visual artists, died on June 22 at the age of 87 in the city of Trujillo, in northern Peru, according to the foundation he founded in 2006.
"With profound sorrow, but also with immense gratitude, we mourn the passing of Gerardo Chávez (Trujillo 1937-2025), a master of Peruvian visual art, a tireless creator, and a luminous figure in Latin American culture," the foundation said in a statement.
It added that "his painting, deeply personal and charged with mythical resonances, was also a way of thinking about time, memory, and the collective soul."
