Football is often a platform for social and political messages, with stadiums hosting banners and chants calling for an end to the violence in Gaza. However, the Alavés fans' initiative surpassed any precedent, sending a strong message against Israel and in favor of Palestine.
Before kickoff of the La Liga match against Elche, the team's fans appeared in the stands with bloodied dolls representing babies and wearing Palestinian scarves. At the same time, they displayed huge banners against the genocide. One banner read "20,000+ Children Murdered," another "Stop Genocide - Freedom for Palestine," while the third was a stunning representation of Pablo Picasso's famous "Guernica" adapted to the colors of Palestine.
The Spanish painter's iconic work, considered the most powerful anti-war painting in the history of art, was recreated by Basque fans in black, white, red, and green, conveying, in their own unique way, a universal message of peace.
