MANHATTAN, New York, USA, September 7, 2025 – Not even the rain could stop the NYLAAT Latin American Art Triennial from opening its doors this Saturday at Nolan Park House 18 on Governors Island. Artists, curators, and contemporary art lovers gathered to tour both the outdoor installations and those exhibited inside the historic residence. This space brings together works by artists from different countries in the region, highlighting the continent's identity, memory, and social context. “The Latin American Art Triennial in New York, entitled Sensory Fusion, explores the relationship between architecture, urbanism, and the social processes of our region, addressing themes such as gentrification, displacement, and the developments that impact our communities,” said Alexis Mendoza, curator of the event.
From Argentina, artist Liana Strasberg presented work at the inaugural exhibition and highlighted the importance of building bridges between Latin America and New York through art. “I work on individual and collective memory in a contemporary way, exploring how technology shapes our bodies and our identity. At this intersection between the natural and the artificial, I think of memory as a fragmentary process where past, present, and future intertwine to imagine future memories,” Strasberg explained.
Peruvian artist Niceli Portugal, a Brooklyn resident for 15 years, presented Apacheta, Room for Growth, Espacio para Crecer, at the triennial. This piece connects Andean tradition with the migrant experience in New York through materials collected in her Bushwick neighborhood. “With Apacheta, I make an analogy with immigrants in New York, like myself. I use fragments of my environment to construct myself, and the work will continue to grow throughout the edition. The exposed rod represents that potential for growth, that idea that we haven't finished constructing ourselves yet,” Portugal explained.
The NYLAAT Latin American Art Triennial begins a multi-month journey with exhibitions at various venues across the city, offering art lovers in New York the opportunity to enjoy a diverse and enriching journey that celebrates the region's creativity and cultural dialogue.
