Dominican art has forged its identity between the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe. Paul Giudicelli pioneered abstraction and informalism, while Wifredo García portrayed Dominican life with a critical eye. The School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo has been fundamental to its professionalization. In the second half of the 20th century, Ramón Oviedo and Cándido Bidó achieved international recognition with works that fused popular and modern styles. The Santo Domingo Art Biennial has energized the art scene. In recent decades, artists such as Scherezade García and Jorge Pineda have explored migration, memory, and identity from the perspective of the diaspora. Dominican art is a constant reinvention of the Caribbean.
