Three days of resistance and mobilization through visual arts, music, film, and gastronomy in Bairro Alto. Admission is free.
Portugal officially recognized the State of Palestine on International Peace Day, September 21st. In October, from the 9th to the 11th, Casa do Comum will once again be the epicenter of the Art for Palestine project, which seeks to raise funds for humanitarian assistance. The program—which extends to other spaces in the city, such as Teatro do Bairro and Auditório Camões—includes exhibitions, concerts, discussions, and even gastronomic events.
"This year's edition takes place at a particularly symbolic moment: October marks two years since the most recent invasion of the Gaza Strip, which tragically marked the lives of millions of Palestinians. It is in this context that the project reinforces its mission to raise awareness of the Palestinian cause through art and solidarity," reads a press release.
The event kicks off at Casa do Comum, with the first screening in Portugal of "All That's Left of You." Directed by Cherien Dabis, a Palestinian filmmaker based in the United States, the film will be shown again on the 9th, reinforcing the organization's commitment to "promoting new, quality cinema," as stated in a statement from the organization, which also highlights the usual charity art auction. With all proceeds going to support Palestine, the pieces can be purchased by the public through online bidding, and donations from artists and personalities such as André Letria, Akacorleone, Fernanda Fragateiro, Gabriela Albergaria, Luísa Sobral, Mantraste, and Rita Redshoes have already been confirmed.
Also on the 8th, at 7:00 pm, the Camões Auditorium will host the contemporary dance performance "Love in the Time of Apartheid," by Palestinian choreographer and dancer Sharaf DarZaid. With live music by Maen El Ghoul, the 35-minute solo will be followed by a conversation about "the emotional and political dilemmas of living under occupation, between love for one's homeland and love for a partner marked by the restrictions of Israel's family unification policy."
On the 9th and 10th, the entire program will be held at the Common House. Highlights include a screening of Palestinian short films (Thursday, 4:00 p.m.) and debates reflecting on Palestine through art, politics, and contemporary culture. On the 10th, for example, editors Bernardino Aranda (Tigre de Papel), Pedro Morais (Antígona), João Figueira (KKYM), and Zeferino Coelho (Caminho) will meet to discuss "Reading Palestine."
There will also be several creative workshops with artists such as Alexandre Esgaio (fanzines), Ana Carmela (embroidery), Clara Rego (ceramics), and Catarina Sobral (illustration), allowing the public to experiment with different artistic expressions. Also noteworthy is the cooking workshop led by Manar Aali on October 11th at 10:00 am at Estrela da Bica. In addition to this workshop, there will be dinners featuring Palestinian dishes at Casa do Comum from October 9th to 11th, from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
If you're more into music, expect mini-concerts by Benjamim, Carlos Bica & Gonçalo Neto, Orca, and Tiago Gomes & Flak, along with DJ sets by Jorge Caiado b2b Bernardo Vaz, Luís Varatojo, Mãe Dela, Selecta Alice, and Violet b2b Wugori, spread across the various venues. The program also includes performances by Handala Dabke, Joana Craveiro, and Leonor Keil.
On the 11th, there's also a schedule at Teatro do Bairro – staged readings of The Gaza Monologues, by the Palestinian collective Ashtar Theatre – and at Outra Cena – including live animation with illustrator Vítor Ferreira. But if you don't want to miss a thing, it's best to check out the full program. Admission is free at Casa do Comum, although visitors are invited to make donations to the cause, and there is a fee at other venues (prices vary).
