Latin American Artists MACLA and Montalvo Join Forces for Exhibition

Joint Art Exhibition

The Movement for Latin American Art and Culture, or MACLA, in downtown San Jose and the Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga are collaborating on a multimedia exhibition showcasing the knowledge and stories of generations.

For “From Their Hands to Ours,” five Latin American artists use familiar materials in new ways and rethink traditional craftsmanship to tell their personal narratives, creating a dialogue between the past and the present.

Estefania Azipis is a Long Beach-based artist whose work stems from her upbringing in Guatemala and addresses her relationship with her father to explore a journey of longing, transition, and resilience.

Miguel Arzabe is an Oakland-based artist who deconstructs paintings and reassembles them in a way reminiscent of Bolivian textile practices.

Rafa Esparza, from Los Angeles, reflects on his Chicano heritage by creating adobe bricks, referencing his father, to explore themes of family, work, and home.

Edra Soto, a Chicago-based artist, examines diasporic identities and colonial histories stemming from her Puerto Rican migration and extending to her current Chicago community.

Arleene Correa Valencia, a Napa-based artist, transforms her immigrant experience into a visual exploration of herself and her identity.

The exhibition runs until March 8 at MACLA at 510 S. First St. Moves to San Jose.
