Latin American Artists: From 1785 to Now is an ambitious publication showcasing the work and artistic contributions of more than 300 modern and contemporary artists from Latin America. Published by the renowned publishing house Phaidon, the book brings together the work of 308 artists in a comprehensive exploration of the region's artistic diversity and cultural vitality.
Featuring artists born or based across 20 Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking regions of Latin America, the publication presents a remarkable range of artistic voices, from internationally celebrated figures to lesser-known talents whose work deserves wider recognition.
The graphic design was developed by the Brazilian studio PS.2, which chose typography as the central visual language of the book, using it to reflect the richness and diversity of Latin American visual culture.
A bespoke typeface was created specifically for the cover, transforming lettering into both text and image. Alternating letterforms and decorative elements inspired by the shared popular culture of the region give the publication a distinctive visual identity.
The combination of CMYK and Pantone colours, together with a dry embossing technique, adds further depth and refinement to the book's physical appearance.
The project is an excellent example of how contemporary graphic design can connect typography, cultural heritage and editorial creativity in a compelling visual statement.
