"Shukran": Gaza pays tribute to Lamine Yamal with a mural among ruins

"Shukran": A mural of Lamine Yamal brings his gesture with the Palestinian flag to the rubble of Gaza
It's how two local artists thank him after the iconic moment when the player waved the flag during the La Liga title celebrations.

The young FC Barcelona star, Lamine Yamal, has become a symbol of hope in the Gaza Strip. After his recent gesture of waving the Palestinian flag during the celebrations for winning the La Liga title with the Catalan club, two Gazan artists decided to pay him a moving tribute by painting a huge mural of him on the remains of a building destroyed by bombings. "Shukran," meaning thank you, they pronounce as they paint.

The artwork, which has begun to go viral on social media, shows the 18-year-old forward smiling and wearing the Barça jersey, which blends chromatically with the colors of the Palestinian flag. The mural was painted among the ruins, becoming a focal point for local residents who see the footballer as a voice for their cause. The symbolism is profound: the resistance and international support of a people against Israel's ongoing genocide.

The image that inspired this tribute dates back to last Monday, during Barça's victory parade through the streets of Barcelona. At one point during the parade, Lamine Yamal took a Palestinian flag offered to him by a supporter and waved it from the open-top bus, an image that went viral and was interpreted as a strong message of support for the Palestinian people amidst the current conflict. The Palestinian Football Federation itself posted on social media: "From Palestine… thank you, Lamine Yamal."

From Gaza, the artists' message is clear: it is a show of gratitude for using his global platform to raise awareness of their situation. "It's a message from the ashes of war so the world can hear our voice," sources close to the initiative told Pal News.

However, the gesture has not been without controversy. While it has been received with jubilation in Palestine, the reaction in the Spanish sporting and political spheres has been mixed.

FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick addressed the issue at a press conference, admitting that, although he is not in favor of players taking political stances during celebrations, he respects the young man's autonomy. "I've spoken with him; it's his decision, he's 18 and of legal age," the German coach stated, emphasizing that the team's priority is "to make people happy through football."

On the other hand, political figures such as Gabriel Rufián (ERC) and Pablo Iglesias (founder of Podemos) have praised the player's courage, highlighting the enormous impact such a gesture has coming from a star with millions of fans worldwide. In contrast, the player has also been the target of criticism and hostile comments on social media from those who believe that sport should remain separate from geopolitical conflicts.

Despite the debate, Yamal's image has become part of the landscape of a devastated Gaza, linking elite football with the harsh humanitarian reality of the region.
